Storage guide-Helpful storage hints

The most important thing one should have in mind while choosing a storage unit  is that there has to be a careful planning of things to be stored. Make an inventory of the stored items and keep the list in a safe place from where you can access them easily. One should not store anything that is combustible.

Use standardized boxes for easy storage and stacking. When you stack them, remember to keep the heavy ones at the bottom and the lighter ones on top.  When things are of like shape and size, there is less confusion. Here are some helpful tips of storing some times and subsequently forming an excellent way of utilizing the storage facility:

1.      Refrigerator: See that it is clean and dry. The space inside the freezer can be used to store small items. It is advisable to keep the refrigerator door in your unit ajar. This will stop mold from growing inside.

2.      You should wrap glass items in paper, bubble wrap or any other protective covering and pack them in strong boxes.

3.      You can keep your clothes in large appliances like the washing machine. In fact the interior part of the washing machine can be used to store light weight items. All you have to is remove all the hoses from washing machines and keep them in the tub. See that you secure the electrical cords with taps to prevent any short circuits or wire damage.

4.      You can fold chairs, sofa, baby bedding, if they have the folding facility in them, to save floor space in the storage unit. You can detach the legs of tables and such other kinds of furniture, if they are removable.

5.      Prop the big beds and mattresses so that they stand straight.

6.      Any metal or iron objects should be clean dried and wiped with a rust protector so they do not get rusted.

7.      Keep your packing boxes full with padding and crumpled newspaper because if they are half-filled they can fall down if anything heavy is placed on them.

8.      Protect your appliances and furniture from gathering moisture. You can leave some space between the unit wall and your belongings so that the air can move freely within the unit. You should also cover the unit floor with plastic sheeting to prevent condensation and cover your items with a linen cloth to stop them from gathering dust.

9.      Apart from the strict vigil and security provided by storage companies, it becomes your responsibility to prepare your own against theft. Always keep your valuable items at the back and secure your unit with the best quality padlock.

10. You must not keep any inflammable or combustible item in the storage facility. Cleaning liquids, paints, explosives, oil, gasoline etc are strictly forbidden. Make sure you exhaust the tank of the gas which your appliance runs in.

It is ideal to leave small gaps or distance between the boxes and the furniture in your storage unit so that you can get easy access to the items you want without any hassle of move or feeling congested.
